CHRISTINE CUNNINGHAM- TEXTILE ARTIST
Welcome to my world of textiles and print.
I am an abstract Textile Artist creating wall hangings from recycled materials sourced from car boot sales and charity shops. Each textile is unique and cannot be reproduced. Pieces are organically grown over time, some reworked over a period of years. I have been creating textiles for over thirty years, having learned traditional skills at school. I am untrained and love to experiment with structure and fabric manipulation.
I have two bodies of works:
The Natural Collection explores abstract flower design, seasonal abstracts, visions of India and Buddhism, Christianity, childhood nostalgia and the seaside.
The Womanhood Collection explores natural states of being, emotional and physical trauma, breast cancer, love and ego, fertility and sexuality. I was inspired by my own experience with breast cancer, having had a double mastectomy.
I use recycled materials in my work. More unusual materials are cat hair, my own hair, the underwire of a bra, inner lining of an old cushion, speaker fabric, laddered tights, coat pockets.
My signature is the embellishment of the surface area in light reflective beads, buttons, old jewelry. Some textiles are hand embroidered with original poetry, providing an emotional depth to which the viewer can relate.
Each textile provides a range of prints, both standard A4 (£40) and Limited Editions (£90), signed by the artist. Choose from the original colour palette, sepia, gold, marble, lead and ink.
